Area of Specialty: Depression

Overview

Depression is characterized by low mood or feelings of hopelessness and guilt, low energy, and changes in weight and/or eating habits. It occurs on a spectrum, with varying degrees of severity and impacts on life. Diagnosis within this spectrum include Major Depressive Disorder, Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (a diagnosis only made in children), Persistent Depressive Disorder, and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. While these diagnoses are lumped together under the category of depression, that can have very different presentations.

The cause of depression and related disorders are not well understood. The most prominent theory is that there is a disruption in the serotonin system, however that theory doesn’t fully hold up to the scientific evidence, which helps to explain why medications used to manipulate this system are not any more effective than placebo. Even without a full understanding of the cause, there are several factors that contribute to worsening of symptoms which can help guide treatment interventions.

Removing Obstacles in Depression

The most common obstacles to healing in depression are:

  • Poor diet high in inflammatory processed foods with low nutrient density
  • Food allergies (which also increase inflammation)
  • Lack of regular exercise – perhaps the strongest antidepressant we have available to us
  • Specific nutrient deficiencies such as vitamin D and B12, folate, or other B vitamins, or deficiencies caused by prolonged medication use
  • Hypothyroidism (low functioning thyroid)
  • Adrenal fatigue

Stimulate Healing in Depression

At Resilience Naturopathic, we have found that the most effective method to stimulate healing in depression is homeopathy. This unique system of medicine is the cornerstone to our success in the Resilience Method as it helps our patients find balance and stability.
With homeopathy, those suffering from depression

  • Have progressive and prolonged improvements in mood
  • Have increasingly longer periods of mood stability (for those who suffer from cyclical rather than persistent depression)
  • Are able to bounce back from life’s ups and downs that would previously have triggered a depressive episode
  • Gradually reduce their medication
  • Get better as a whole person – mind, body and spirit
  • Feel like themselves again!

Major Depressive Disorder:

  • Most commonly referred to when someone says they have “depression”
  • Symptoms include loss of interest in enjoyable activities, changes in sleep and eating patterns (too little or too much), sadness, feelings of hopelessness or guilt, and in some cases, recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Symptoms generally last at least 2 weeks without relief

Persistent Depressive Disorder:

  • Formerly called Dysthymia or Dysthymic Disorder
  • Same symptoms as Major Depressive Disorder, but less severe over a longer period of time (generally 2 years)

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder:

  • Severe disturbance in mood for 2 weeks prior to onset of period
  • May have symptoms of depression, irritability, “brain fog,” fatigue, etc

Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder:

  • Diagnosed in children and adolescents between ages 6 and 18
  • Characterized by irritable mood and behavioral “outbursts” that are out of proportion to the situation

A Case Study in Depression

Case Study

Karen* had been struggling with postpartum depression since the birth of her third child. She was nursing, so she didn’t want to take any medication. She tried everything she could to help herself feel better. She followed strict dietary strategies outlined in popular books. She exercised daily, and although this was the only thing that gave her any relief, it wasn’t lasting and she would go back to feeling awful a few hours later. In hopes of finding something natural and safe to take during nursing, Karen reached out to Resilience Naturopathic.

Karen was an excellent candidate for the use of homeopathic medicine for her case. She had already removed all of the obstacles to health, but wasn’t feeling back to herself yet. Homeopathy is incredibly safe, even in pregnancy, nursing mothers, and newborns, so this made it a no brainer for both Karen and her doctor.

Karen experienced depression as low energy, sadness where she would tear up easily with little to no provocation, feelings over being overwhelmed, and significant brain fog. She was having a hard time feeling joyful for things she used to love, including her religion, and even struggled with feeling love for her husband and children despite knowing deep down that she loved them. She longed to have those feelings of love back.

Many of these symptoms are common in depression, and on their own they aren’t useful for prescribing a homeopathic medicine. Fortunately, Karen had some unique symptoms that helped point to the right treatment. While many people feel better from exercising, Karen felt significantly better. After a very intense exercise session, she would feel like she had never been depressed for a few hours. The trick is that it had to be very intense exercise. A short or easy walk didn’t help her feel better at all. She also had a significant increase in sensitivity to both sound and odors. Sound in particular, even slight sound like a ticking clock, made her brain fog “1,000 times worse.”

When common symptoms of depression have strong aggravating or ameliorating factors, they become very useful in prescribing individualized homeopathic remedies. The remedy that has shown to be most effective for healing the type of depression Karen experienced was Sepia. She began Sepia 30C, taken daily, and within a few days she was feeling more like herself. She had more energy, and was handling stress much better. The best part – she started feeling love for her husband and children again!

What Patients are Saying

Greg

Dr. Bahr is nothing short of amazing. I was diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder when I was 17 years old. For the next 6 years my condition seemed to get worse. My medication was constantly changing especially in the last 3 years. I started to believe that the rest of my life would be for the most part flat and lifeless. I didn’t want the mania and depression any more and I just hoped that my psychiatrist would find a medication that would provide lasting results. It wasn’t until about a year ago (fall 2014) that I read an article about Dr. Bahr. It was overwhelming to read about someone who had experienced and had managed to overcome the struggles that come with our diagnosis. It seemed incredible that while many medications are a life saver, there was so much more to becoming well as a whole person. I went to see Dr. Bahr a few weeks later and have been having follow up appointments since. Although I still have a long way to go in my journey to wellness, my family and friends agree that the last 12 months have been the best since I started experiencing Bipolar symptoms in 2006. Dr. Bahr has shown me no end of kindness and compassion. She can empathize with my struggles which has helped take the loneliness away that I and no doubt many others experience when trying to cope with a mental illness. I feel that Dr. Bahr has cared for me in the same way she would a close friend or a member of her family. I would definitely recommend Dr. Bahr to anyone that wants to become well as a whole person.

Brian (name changed) is a changed boy. He is happy and hopeful and speaks about things he looks forward to in the future. I should also add that he completed 6th grade yesterday with straight As. He also has not seen or spoken with his father since January. Bullying at school and his father were two main contributing factors to his depression. He will begin a daily exercise program on Monday at the gym, which he’s looking very much forward to, which will also boost his confidence. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart for providing such a wonderful service to my son. Your work is amazing and Brian is living proof of that. You knew exactly what to look for, what to ask, and exactly what to provide for his healing. I cannot thank you enough for helping Brian embrace life again
